Museum got naked. /  It's open for all  /  We'll show you everything / Nothing's between you and art. / Art for Whom? / Art for All.

National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea 1

Problem: This project started with the museum’s “paradigm shifting” request to convert hideous construction fence into an art piece. Although there were many instances in which both inside and outside of art museum was constructed and decorated by artists, decoration of wall by an advertiser was rare. The National Museum of Contemporary Art foresaw that advertisement is a form of pop art in today’s society that permits direct communication with the general public. The museum’s decision was based on the idea that Jeski Social Campaign’s creative and exceptional sprit coincides with the museum’s future blueprint of being renewed, destructive, and innovative. Also the museum looked for a direct, specific and clear transfer of ideas rather than being pure art that is abstractive and difficult for the public to understand.

Solution: Naked Museum. - Construction fence: length 343m, height 4.4m – 6m - Artwork installation: length 227m, Height: 1.6m – 2.4m above from top of the fence.Naked full-body nude of some of the most iconic people in history of art were installed to convey museum’s sincere desire to transform into a place that is open to general population regardless of their sex and age. (The feminine parts of giant sized Mona Lisa were covered by some trees as it may cause complaint from social groups and Ministry of Gender Equality.) Also by designing the fence as a change room and showing only certain parts of the nude, we intended to provide joy of imagination to the views while reducing the costs of production (Similar examples are cover walls of Admiral Yi Sun-shin in Gwanghwamun called “Changing Clothes”, a recent wall painting of an owl with using Gangnam police station’s windows as eyes, and advertising artwork of Daegu track and field championship). At the bottom of the fence, phrases “Museum got naked. / It's open for all / We'll show you everything /Nothing's between you and art. / Art for Whom? / Art for All” are written on it.*In this case, NAKED means not just “cloths-less”, but also implies the meaning of “unaffected or plain”. Literally, it is saying “naked”, but idiomatically, it is saying “genuine”, “plain”, or ‘unaffected”.

Result: : There is the Korean presidential residence “Chungwadae” across the street and it is also tourist attraction site for foreign tourists from all over the world. This implies that the place is interesting as Eastern and Western, Old and New coexist, and this controversial piece created huge issues. HOWEVER the feminine parts of giant sized Mona Lisa was covered by some trees as it may cause complaint from social groups and Ministry of Gender Equality).

( Art for whom? Art for All!!

The planning of Naked Museum stems from Jeski Social Campaign’s dissatisfaction with Art world. There is a copy phrase saying “Art for whom? Art for all”. This phrase is written in aggressive graffiti-like way with spray paint. In fact, the general public has been ignoring art completely. They developed a sense of denial as they believed the art is for people with art background or upper-class people with social and financial stability to visit galleries as their noble hobbies. And as the idea of art as “noble” and “deep” world that is hard for public to understand is still prevalent, Jeski Social Campaign talent-donated their ideas and artworks to breakdown the wall between public viewers of the National Museum of Contemporary Art and bone-deep artists. Jeseok Yi also added that next generation’s art world will involve 3d movies, games and advertisements, rather than paintings and sculptures.
